OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of BOCRI is to contribute to the prevention and reduction of crime through research. The main specific objective is to use research to advance understanding of crime related problems, provide alternatives and implement programmes that would:

  • Raise awareness on causes of crime in the country in line with the first VISION 2036 of having an educated and informed nation.
  • Support and promote cooperation, collaboration and coordination of stakeholders in the sector, to foster just and efficient criminal justice system in Botswana.
  • Promote and advance diversion programs for young people in conflict with the law.
  • Offer pre and post-trial services that shall include though not limited to para-legal clinics, hold-way house services and those that would promote restorative justice.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

BOCRI’s Core work areas include Criminal Justice Research, documentation and dissemination of the findings. This research would be used to do the following activities:

  • Advocacy for reforms in legislation and criminal justice system
  • Awareness and training citizens and stakeholders in crime related matters
  • Advocate for fair administrative, restorative and correctional justice
  • Skills development for ex-offenders
  • Employment assistance service for ex-prisoners
  • Education fund for offenders/ex-offenders and victims
  • Counselling services

To be a world class crime research institute that contributes to the reduction of conditions and circumstances that push Batswana to commit crime.

To contribute to the reduction of crime and support the improvement and reform of the criminal justice system in Botswana as espoused in the 4th pillar of the VISION2036 which is to have a safe and secure nation.
